Slow System Performance - How To Fix It?

By Dan Ashlery

Slow system performance is one common issue that most computers face. Due to the nature of their operation, PC's tend to lose their efficiency over time. However, it is mostly not because of the failure of the hardware, but due to the so-called "mess" inside the software parts of the computer. In order to fix this problem, some areas of the pc need special treatment.

1. Fragmented files

The first cause of slow system performance is the fragmentation of files. In other words, the information on the hard disk becomes disorganized. And when a program or application loads, it takes more time. All the files that are needed for the operation of this program, are now stored in various parts of the hard drive, instead of being in the same sector of the disk.

This problem is a natural result of everyday computer usage. During the operation of a PC, certain files are deleted and others added. This slowly fragments the data. One of the best cures for cleaning up such chaotic placement of data, is the Disk Defragmenter. It is a free tool that all windows-based computers come with.
2. Windows Registry

Slow system performance can also be caused by the "mess" inside the Windows registry. This delicate database stores key attributes and settings of most programs and applications. Since windows accesses registry files regularly, slight modifications are constantly made.

In addition to the fragmentation process of the hard-drive, registry is slowly filled with old entries which are no more valid. Such outdated registry entries can cause slowdown, errors and even system crashes.

It is advisable to run a registry cleaner, which can restore the registry to its healthy state. This software scans and deletes all invalid entries.

3. Virus

Finally, slow system performance may be a symptom of a malware or a virus. These type of dishonest programs can often run quietly in the background, eating up system's resources and paralyzing the smooth operation of the computer.

Hence it is vital to select a reputable anti-virus software, which is capable of detecting and eliminating such threats from the computer. After installing the software, make sure you also download any updates available for this program. This ensures that your copy of the program is equipped with the latest virus definition files. Otherwise the anti-virus software may not be capable of recognizing the newest threats.

To fix slow system performance, run the Disk Defragmenter to eliminate the fragmentation of files, perform a scan with the registry cleaner software to keep the registry well-organized, and use an anti-virus software with its latest virus definitions to keep your computer free from malicious software.
